Bring Human Rights Day to your classroom
Submitted by Nicole on Mon, 11/22/2010 – 22:41
International Human Rights Day is coming up on December 10, and this year’s theme is Speak Up – Stop Discrimination.
To celebrate this day, Teachers Without Borders would like to recognize teachers who work to end discrimination in their classrooms and communities.
We are asking teachers to send stories, photos and/or video of their class activities that focus on human rights and anti-discrimination.
HOW TO GET STARTED:
There are several simple activities you can do with your class in honor of Human Rights Day:

Create posters or a mural.

Make a video about discrimination.

Ask students to take photos that capture their ideas on discrimination and toleracnce.

Assign a reading with a human rights theme.

Have a class debate or discussion.

Any idea you come up with that will engage students.

Remember to document your class activity with photos and/or video and send them to Stephanie Knox Cubbon: stephanie@teacherswithoutborders.org.
Submissions sent by December 7 will be displayed on TWB’s website on Human Rights Day, December 10.
Please note: If you cannot complete this activity by December 7th, we still welcome your submissions, which will feature on the Peace Education section of our website throughout the year.
Here are some suggested questions to discuss with your students before or during the class activity:

What are human rights?

How is discrimination a violation of human rights?

What is diversity?

How can diversity be a source of enrichment?

What would the world look like if there was no diversity?

What is discrimination?

How can discrimination be a source of injustice and violence?

What are ways that people are discriminated against in our society?

Have you ever been discriminated against? (Note: this question can elicit strong emotions in students, and students may not wish to share. You may want to ask this as a question for personal reflection or journaling rather than discussion, depending on your students and class dynamics.)

If you see/witness discrimination, how can you stop it?

  Other resources:

Teachers can review and use Unit 2 of TWB’s Peace Education course. Section 4, page 23 covers Human Rights Education, and section 6, page 39 covers Multicultural Education.

Apa gunanya Bulan Kitab Suci?

Sejarah Singkat

Do you know that reading is essentially an active process? One reader is better than another in proportion as he or she is capable of a greater range of activity in reading. We can easily see that writing and speaking are active processes; but sometimes we fail to realize that listening and reading are also active processes. In other words we wrongly think that listening and reading as passive reception from an active giver and suppose that receiving a communication is like receiving a gift or an injection. The truth is that reading is better or worse according to as it is more or less active.

Reading enables us to increase our word-power. It is exactly the same by reading we collect a large vocabulariy. A large vocabulary enables us to follow the thought of a writer more easily. The more words we know, the better and faster we understand. We cannot become an efficient reader upon a small vocabulary, especially in English, which has more words (about 600.000) than any other language, and which is continually swelling with additions from many other languages.

So make a note of words that we do not understand when we come across them. Try to figure out the meaning from the context, from the sense of the sentence or paragraph. We will find clues. Look them up later in a dictionary and when we do, take a good clear look at the word. That first “snapshot” of a new word is important.

Finally use these new words in our talk, if necessary we repeat again and again the same words in different context, and it is also important use these new words in our writings as soon as possible and as much as possible. I think it is good if we have a pocket book in which we can write new words and review them periodically. A wise people said, “if you use them three times, they got into your working vocabulary, they are yours for a lifetime and you are a better reader, an active reader. Do you believe it? If yes, then try it!

THE PARTICIPATING EDUCATION

(Andri Hermawan Saputro,SS – SHS)

I. Introduction

The education world is a part of process to realize humanization. So that, many aspects of it directly or indirectly have a lot of influences and participating in this one. Those can become internal or external aspects. The internal one is related with everything which can be found in human’s mind and body as such basic character, physical condition, and empathy; the other one is others and environmental condition around him. Through these, we want to say that education is a process to build one’s character to make good relationship with all thing around him. This paper is going to say about something which can be found in a Classic Chinese education according to the path of Confucian and it will guide us to see deeper about how this one can be manifested in our-own reality in the very different condition.

The UNESCO adopts the values of this Confucian idea as the general aims of education, and Saint Peter’s Senior High School implements those values. If we try to deepen our thinking, we will find only one which will be reached: junzi (good people), shen ren (smart and useful people) or the real human (man or woman). So, through this paper we want to say that education is a process which combines internal and external aspect of human person to reach the real purpose: the real human. To gain this purpose, one have to think and be practicing it for a life time.

May this paper be able to help us in reflecting any conditions that have correlation with God, self, others, and the world to make all of it better that in the future also can make our-own life better. Educating process is a set of processes which need relation between all the component of it: man, the other, and environment (nature).

II. The Educational Values in Chinese Tradition

In the ancient China, education is placed in the context of interpersonal relationship. Parents and the oldest brother take a duty as educator for their sons and the younger one. The matters are practical things and how to make a good relation with others. In this case, education can be related with the farmer life experience on agriculture. In the next period, the scholars say that man is placed between Heaven and Earth. It has correlation with the relationship between man and other; it is also about the relationship between man and nature. Men need norms and values of life which arrange their daily attitude. They also need to understand him-self. In this case, the purpose of education grows not only to do practical things and keeps a good relation with others, but also finds the meaning of life and participates to build the regular and prosperous society.

Confucius is a famous educator, philosopher, and political man in the Chinese History. His idea of process to realize ren and li is an idea to gain a fully-human-person. It means that to gain ren-man, one need to learn ritual, etiquette, good manner and morality so he can participate in his society. Explicitly, li and ren describe the relation between means and purpose. For him, ren is the real condition which makes one has something that differs himself from the other being (plant and animal).

Confucius argues that learning and education is the long process to manifest ren in one’s real life, so he can become a fully-human-person. It needs to create an harmonious social life. Confucius sees ren as the man’s Tao (way). The early Chinese sees Heaven and Earth as nature. What is called Heaven and Earth not other than nature and all of cosmic power included the principles in it. The mean principle that arranges all of part of nature is called: Tao. From the nature ‘production process’, we can find two important aspects such a part that ever-changing and the never-changing one. According to Confucius, there is Heaven’s Tao in the nature of man. His duty is to realize and apply ren in his real life and society. This can be done with attempting to develop talents and every aspect to understand and then applying his understanding to reach fulfillment as human being. He also has to participate in harmonious social life building.

The character of ren is built from two characters which are man and number ‘2’. It describes two people which make a relationship between them. So that, the real quality of ren can be manifested in the relation between one and others, or it’s happened in the social interaction field. Without humanity – which practice through social norm and morality – or if we let personal interest playing, how highest morality knowledge which man has cannot help him to support or gain his real purpose in his life: ren-man. As a matter of fact, that man does not practice his Tao.

Confucius regards the fully-human-person as one who has oneness with nature. Everything he does, it will ever not violate norm and morality. He can be a model for others to gain the same level. Beside this, according to him, the fully human person has a good relationship with others, he does also not only know how to increase him-self, but also how to help others in cultivating his life so they also can reach their life purpose. The fully-human-person is man, who can arrange his internal conflicts well so he can be a balance human-person.

Shortly, it can be said that the fully-human-person is a man who can realize the nature of humanity in him and reach a balance condition of self, which is manifested in the life that maintains truth, goodness and esthetics. After developing himself, he has duty to support and develop the other one in oneness with all of his life dimensions. His condition which make him always attempt to develop himself, show that a Junzi is an ordinary people who can make many mistakes, but he want to reflect it and can learn something about his-own fault and use it to make any life evaluation, and then use this experience – ever makes mistake – as an exactly mean to gain many successes.

III. The Mean Aspects in Educating Process

The first thing of educating process is how to build a good communication and personal relation person by person, person and his group in a certain place and between groups. There are five important things in Confucian education process. The first thing is learning to know. An educator may become a facilitator for his students. In this case, every student is motivated to establish the need of getting information, expert in practical life and a certain capability which he wants to master. The second one is learning to do. Students are conditioned to do productive things about knowledge, feeling and arrange his freedom. Third is learning to live together. In this case every community is designed to become a place where students can experience something about cooperative learning, working in groups, togetherness and solidarity, so that this community will become a home where every relation in it be based on fraternity and familiarity. The fourth is learning to be. In this case, every students will be taught to have high self-confident. He is situated in a respectful, to be trusted, honored conditions. He is also personally received by others. So he has an independent life, a specific capability in his life and freedom to express his-own idea. The fifth one of it is learning through life. Education process is not bounded by time and room. In other word, education and process of learning will be an ongoing formation for students. In this case, its orientation is the process itself not the result one. In it, the failure will be recognized as an important part in educating process. Beside of the above five values of learning, there is one important thing that may not be forgotten if we want to say about faith. This one is learning to trust in God. Educating process cannot be separated from how someone lives his faith in God through a religion or any other things that recognize God as an Absolute Being. In this case, education will be done in the process of landing any religion dogmas through living dialog between His followers. Living dialog means that every follower lives their faith through real actions for the other one. On the other hand, this will be a way to practice the values of life and morality. So, it can be said that in this case religion has function to be a ‘moral keeper’ in any condition especially in different culture and religion. So the purpose is how students and teachers can practice morality in their own ‘home life’ and school.

In Confucian school, there are five fields of important experience and activity which supports self character building and self development. The first is art which trains man to establish his imagination, feeling, reflection, and the sense of esthetics. The second one is ritual and ceremony. Ritual is a physical training and discipline life in society. Sweeping, eating, kampong working together, communication, visiting the sick person are ritual practice which is very important in character building. The third is history learning process. It means that ritual life can be done by knowing and establishing empathy to others which be related with knowing about values and moral norms. Any important thing about it is related to how someone can create or establish a supporting condition to be a fully-human-person. History also gives many things about any mistakes that has been done by former generations in which we still receive the influence of it and now trying to get the way out of it. The fourth is participating in a social life. Man is a social person who cannot life alone. The fifth is related to nature. In this case, we need any positive perspective about nature in character building process.

IV. Conclusion

Education in the context of character and humanity developing process is a process which combines internal capability and external aspects: others and environmental aspects. It presumes there is good relation between all of component of educating process. From this, we want to say that the result or successful educating process is determined by a good team work and the good relation among them.

It also presumes that these three components have to be placed in a certain condition which related with the good communication to gain the successful of educating process. In relation with this, a students may get any chance to express his own character; in this case, a teacher must have an over standard skill in teaching, and it presumes there is a worthy means, and also ‘green environment’, not only physically but also psychologically which can influence the success of this educating process. In short, the needed environment here is a conducive environment to gain the purpose of education.

The six ‘how’ and the five Confucian teaching can be realized if each component of education be able to make a changing role through information exchange, and be showed in good attitude among them. In other word, educating process will be able to be held if every component of education has an optimal condition to process education which is supported by a worthily environment – both of physically and psychologically. It will be said that the success of educating process is the result of togetherness among students, teachers, and every component that participates in the life of students, teachers, and also the environment places, such as parents, baby sitter, school’s staff, OB, OG, security and the other one.

Presented by Rev. Fr. Alex Lanur, OFM, Prof. Dr.
At the Outing Activity of Saint Peter’s School Teachers and Staffs at Villa Ratu, Sukabumi of West Java

Pengantar

Perikemanusiaan berarti menghormati, menjunjung tinggi sesame manusia, setiap orang, setiap manusia.

There is a demand for schools which teaches science, physics, and biology with laboratories to support all students’ activities. So, in the teaching learning process, the students do not only hear their teachers’ explanation but they can also experiment these activities on own. Therefore the students are able to understand the knowledge conveyed deeply and develop information on their own in details. Through the experiments and hypothesis, students can get the essence of empirical science and then, through the exact concept, the students are also able to learn systematically science. In other words, learning is not only how many factors, concepts, and principles, but also how you can understand and reach new knowledge through the learning process.

There is an expectation that school should have complete instruments in the laboratory. It will support all activities in doing research by implementing three concepts of science, such as scientific attitude, scientific process and scientific product. It is absolute fact that to do experiments schools need up to date laboratory instruments. During this learning process students are able to understand the natural phenomena before they make conclusions. At last, they must be responsible for the objectivity of their experiments they have done because sometimes a new theory or discovery of a new product may appear from this process in the laboratory.

To optimize the use of laboratory, an able laboratory assistant is needed. Therefore, every activity in the laboratory could be always under the watch full control. For example, the laboratory assistant should make the schedule for using the laboratory, taking inventory of instruments and disposing the used materials. Of course, this will help tremendously the teachers in teaching and learning process. Indeed. The existence of laboratory assistant makes easier both for the students and the teachers when doing experiments in the laboratory.

The good relation and collaboration between the teachers and the students and disciplined atmosphere enable the students to reach optimum achievements in the fields of science.

Professionalism is important in any job. But have you ever thought what represents professionalism in a teaching environment? ...more

Professionalism is important in any job. But have you ever thought what represents professionalism in a teaching environment? Is it enough for a teacher to look presentable and get their students pass examinations? No. For a teacher, professionalism means juggling many different types of skills, while also considering the needs of the students and the demands of the learning environment.

No short essay could be expected to describe all of the different talents and skills that make a good teacher (many books have been written on the subject), but this essay should give parents and students a few ideas of how and why the teacher organises the class the way he/she does.

Even the easiest classes with ‘easy-to-learn’ topics and model pupils would be difficult to handle for someone who has not experienced teacher-training nor has no previous knowledge of group interaction and behaviour. Lots of people believe that teaching is easy but how many people would truly consider spending every day in the company of children and educating them to the level required by the curriculum.

As teachers, we all recognise that every student is an individual, with individual needs and strengths. A class is a group of individuals, and although often they behave as a group, very often the individuality of separate students becomes more obvious.

It can be a temptation for any teacher to ‘fly with the fastest’ – that is to assume that all of the class are as clever as the most able (or most vocal) children. This assumption is dangerous and can leave the weaker members of the class behind. If there is a particularly advanced child in the group, a teacher would encourage that child to help other students.

Here at Saint Peter’s School, we use teamwork as a method of sharing knowledge and empowering the weaker members of a group. This means that, first; students from the same level are exposed to and learn the same material. Secondly, students receive the same evaluation. Thirdly, the quality of our students can be measured within a class or against other classes at the same level. Fourthly, learners can build confidence and not feel isolated.

This is only one of many ways to organise the class to assist their learning. Different learning environments enable learners in different ways. Some students respond well to visual stimuli, some to audio, some to written exercises and others to a method known as Total Physical Response (TPR). TPR is a teaching method that encourages students to provide a physical response to a question. This method is like a game for the students and allows the teacher to educate without students realising that they are being taught. We can use many different methods to teach the same information but it is up to a professional teacher to choose the most valid for the needs of the particular class.

To make a class as interesting and valid as possible a large amount of a teacher’s time goes into planning lessons and resource development. This means constantly revising the teaching methods used in a particular class and tailoring them to the classes needs.

Professionalism in teaching also involves a large amount of parenting. Since teachers are responsible for the children for a large part of the day, our duties include teaching children politeness, courtesy and the social skills that are necessary for the child to grow up to be a well-rounded individual. To become professional a teacher has to be professional planner, professional presenter, and professional ‘parent’. These are just a few of the responsibilities a teacher has. Sounds easy? Give it a try.

Teacher is a person who teaches students, to make them getting better in knowledge and skill as well. Teachers should...more

Teacher is a person who teaches students, to make them getting better in knowledge and skill as well. Teachers should be able to communicate and transfer the knowledge that they have. Teaching materials are the basic when teachers want to teach their students. There are 5 essential points to master the teaching materials which are reference books, self study, training, internet and team work.

The main source of teaching material is books. Books are very essential here. Teachers should be able to choose the most suitable books for their students, depend on the latter’s potential and intelligence. Most of the time teachers will use the books as reference for teaching and source of information. Good teachers won’t take just only one book as reference but also many other books.

Self study is also needed in mastering the materials. Everything in this world is changing and dynamic. The knowledge will always grow as the time flows. Teachers need to learn this ever-changing information. They should study again and again. Self study is needed to learn new things. Without this, teacher won’t grow in knowledge and the materials will turn old-fashioned.

All people need practice to learn a thing. Training is also one of the conditions to be a good teacher. Training is needed to understand the material even more. Teacher won’t master the material by just reading from reference books, but also by implementing it in the real world. World is dynamic so that training is essential to learn that transformation.

Internet provides us the latest news and information all around the world. Teacher needs internet for getting information and material. The access of internet itself is really fast. So a teacher can get the latest information and material in a short time. It has become even more efficient rather than go to the library and search for a book he needs. It is time consuming and the information itself could become old-fashioned. Nowadays internet could be used by anyone with reasonable prize. So Internet is a must for every professional teacher to master the material and to get information.

Team work is the last one. After doing all of the conditions above, the last important thing to do is team work. Work as a team is very difficult for some people, because every person has different point of view and way of thinking. But we should share our knowledge so others can have more experience and the reverse as well. In different time and place, the knowledge will be different as well. So working as a team and sharing are important in mastering the material.

This boy is friendly and easy going with all of the people around him. No Wonder, as professional entertainer he can associates closely with the teachers and classmates and colleagues. His name is Martua Romero Derbi Nainggolan You can call him Derbi. He also has some various talents in sports.

In Saint Peter Senior High School, usually Derbie fulfills his extracurricular time with playing basketball. It can be understood because playing basket ball is one of his favorite hobbies. But he never dreams that one day he will become one of fencing athletes in Jakarta.

Actually, it is such an accident for him. On April 2006, sport teacher team of Saint Peter’s School, Mr. Albert, Mr. Mikha and Mr. Widi had an idea to take Junior High School and Senior High School student to be trained in order to follow local competition. “Because of Tantra’s idea (SHS student), Adit and I were asked to join the fencing practice” Derbie said. Every afternoon after school activities, Derbie and Adit practiced fencing guided by Mr. Widi. Besides as a Primary sport teacher, Mr. Widi is also one of PON fencing athletes represents for DKI Jakarta.

On June 2006, Derbi and Adit participated in regional competition. “Finally, Adit and I have been successful to achieve 4 medals. I get gold medal in gold kadit level and bronze in junior level. Meanwhile Adit gets silver medal in kadit level and bronze in junior level”, said the first son of two brothers. After this, Derbi and Adit continued to practice fencing because they had to represent Jakarta for national competition on July 2006. And the result was he reached 6 ranks in Indonesia.

Far before he has fencing sport, actually, Derbi, the old brothers of Tamara and Queen is well known for being advertisement model. It happens because of lucky, too. He told that someone from advertising agency asked him for his model in his agency when he and his parents were shopping in the mall. Derbi was five years old at that time. And Derbie himself agreed to do it because model is also one of his dreams. First of all, the pictures were published in daily newspaper, Kompas and other media such as advertisements for commercial houses, BATA shoes, McDonald, antimo and 008 advertisements.

When he was six years old, Derbi was asked for audition. This time he must follow casting test with Sherina in the Sherina’s Adventures movie. “I think there were more one thousands participants followed the audition. Then one by one was eliminated and fortunately, Frans, who was advertising model for Pepsodent and I passed this audition. Finally I am the one who has been chosen,” said the boy whose born on June 8th, 1990. Is Derbie also interested in TV cinema? “I do not think so because will spent my time a lot”, said Derbi who plays in TV cinema as Rafi in Indahnya Karunia-Mu.
